PORT-AU-PRINCE, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Four days after a major earthquake struck Haiti, the capital city was still in an absolute shambles, with hospitals overcrowded , streets strewn with rubble and panic-stricken people waiting for aid.

Eight Chinese police officers, who were unaccounted for, have been confirmed dead.

Meanwhile, the world community has made tireless relief efforts in the past days. Even China, a country from the other corner of the world, has sent a jumbo jet carrying 90 tons of emergency humanitarian supplies and a rescue team of more than 60 crew members.

CAPITAL CITY IN BAD SHAPE

The quake-traumatized capital city was dotted with crashed cars and collapsed buildings. And large numbers of desperate people were wandering among debris trying to rescue with bare hands those trapped. Odor was sending out from decaying bodies, heightening heath risks.

Amid short supplies, nearly all gas stations have run out of storage, and hungry residents began to loot food, water and other necessities in supermarkets. The looters said they were rescuing themselves because they had received no assistance in four days.

Hospitals in Port-au-Prince were crowded with quake victims. In the Peace Hospital, Xinhua reporters saw a great number of the injured lie on the ground or in tents set up in the hospital yard. Relief workers from Spain, Mexico and other countries in the hospital said they were in dire need of medicine, medical equipment and staff.

The capital's airport was in chaos with neither ground nor air control, Xinhua reporters saw. The small airport is struggling with the arrival of waves of planes carrying humanitarian relief supplies and rescue workers.

The devastating earthquake had paralyzed the traffic system and knocked out power in Port-au-Prince.

A Xinhua reporter said it took him more than 20 hours to reach the capital city by land from neighboring Dominican Republic because the jammed Port-au-Prince airport is incapable of handling any civil flights. After his arrival, he found it hard to file his stories back home due to poor communication.

RESCUE WORK AROUND DESTROYED UN BUILDING

At the UN headquarters in Port-au-Prince, rescue teams from China, Brazil, Nepal and other countries were busy detecting signs of life and retrieving bodies. The UN building was flattened in the quake.

Bodies of all eight Chinese police officers had been found in debris by Saturday. The first body was found at 3:30 a.m. (0830 GMT) after more than 80 hours of search and rescue work, and the other seven were retrieved in the following 11 hours.

The rescue site was clouded by bitterness, with a UN flag flying half-mast to mourn the dead. Tears were in the eyes of the Chinese rescue workers who stood in silent tribute for their dead compatriots.

Of the victims, four were permanent members of the UN peace- keeping force in Haiti and the other four were part of a six-member team sent by the Chinese Public Security Ministry on a temporary mission. Their bodies would be transferred back to China as soon as possible, said the Chinese authorities.

Ricci earned these honors because he was the first to have translated the Confucian classics into Latin and Euclid's "Elements of Geometry" into Chinese.

Morello describes the unconventional Italian Jesuit priest as a "Chinese among Chinese," a scholar whose scientific contributions to the imperial Chinese intellectual society covered fields such as astronomy, mathematics and navigation.

Upon his arrival in Macau in 1582, Ricci started to assimilate himself to the surrounding society -- not only by donning Chinese clothing but also by speaking and writing Chinese.

The exotic-looking foreigner astonished Ming Dynasty Emperor Wanli (1573-1620) by precisely predicting an eclipse.

When asked why the emperor was making an exception by having Ricci buried in Beijing upon his death in 1610, then Prime Minister Ye Wenzhong explained: "Have you ever seen a foreigner as learned as Ricci? His translation of the "Elements of Geometry" (into Chinese) alone has earned him the honor of being buried in China."

The Italians are opening an open-air Matteo Ricci museum at his home town Macerata near the Adriatic, as part of their preparations for celebrating the Year of Chinese Culture in 2010.

From the curator's point of view, the exhibition "Between Rome and Peking, to the Heights of History" is helping to dispel the notion that "Ricci is better known in China than in Italy."

BEIJING, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- The ancient tomb unearthed in central China's Henan Province last month is the burial place of the legendary General Cao Cao(155-220 A.D.), the top archaeologist of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) confirmed Wednesday.

"The discovery of Cao Cao's tomb was one of China's greatest archaeological achievements in 2009," Wang Wei, head of the CASS Institute of Archaeology, told a national archaeology conference in Beijing.

The occupancy of the tomb was proven by its style, size, level, age and relics, especially inscribed objects. It was an established system adopted to identify many other ancient tombs in China, Wang said.

The relics used as evidence were directly unearthed from the tomb. Other objects retrieved from grave robbers were only taken into consideration as references.

Inscriptions on the eight tablets in the tomb describing weapons often used by the "Wu King of Wei" were unquestionably solid evidence, said Wang.

"This title of Cao Cao was used only for one year, enabling us to precisely nail down the tomb's age. Also the size, location, level and style of the tomb are all in line with historical recordings of Cao Cao's tomb," he said.

More details of the excavation and how the tomb was proved to be Cao Cao's would be released Thursday morning at a forum hosted by the Archaeology Institute of the CASS, Wang said.

The announcement of the discovery on Dec. 27 triggered skepticism from around the country with scholars and Internet commentators questioning its authenticity.

"The tomb had been raided long before the excavation. It is possible that the evidence was planted. Also there are reports saying that the tablets were retrieved from robbers," said Ma Weidu, a renowned relics collector.

Internet postings speculated that money was behind the excavation. A popular opinion on the Internet is that the tomb could bring 400 million yuan in revenue to the local government.

"It is true that the local government is planning to develop areas around the tomb. But development is only for the purpose of protection by raising funds and attention," said CASS archaeologist Liu Qingzhu.

Cao Cao (155-220 A.D.), who built the strongest and most prosperous state during the Three Kingdoms period (208-280 A.D.), is remembered for his outstanding military and political talents.

Cao Cao is also known for his poems that reflected his strong character. Some of the poems are included in Chinese middle school textbooks.

Three ancient corpses, a man and two women, were found in the two- chamber tomb in Xigaoxue village of Anyang. The man was found to have died in his sixties, which coincided with the age of Cao Cao when he died.

More than 250 items, made of gold, silver, ceramic and other materials, were unearthed from the 740-square-meter tomb, a size appropriate for a king.

Among the items, archaeologists found 59 engraved stone tablets logging the name and quantity of the articles buried in the tomb. Seven of the tablets logged weapons "often used by the Wu King of Wei," or Cao Cao. A similar tablet was retrieved from tomb raiders.

Also unearthed were a large number of paintings on stone plates.

BEIJING, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Thanks to cheap labor and technological innovation, major Chinese shipbuilders have survived the financial crisis which led to a dearth of orders in 2009.

Figures from a top shipping research company showed China has overtaken the Republic of Korea (ROK) as the world's largest shipbuilding nation as Chinese shipbuilders outpaced ROK competitors in both new orders and orders in hand.

Statistics released on Jan. 12 by the London-based Clarkson PLC, the world's leading shipping service provider, showed that only 28.8 million deadweight tonnages (DWT) of ships were ordered globally from January to November in 2009. In 2007, the peak of the shipping boom, new ship orders totaled 272 million DWTs.

However, China's share of the diminishing market has grown significantly since 2009.

XINPUYANG

On Sunday, China's largest self-developed oil tanker left its home of 22 months in Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province, and began its maiden trip to Saudi Arabia.

The 333-meter-long, 60-meter-wide oil Xinpuyang can carry up to 308,000 tonnes of crude oil, and hit a speed of 15.7 knots (equal to 30 km per hour).

Equipped with satellite navigation, radar and monitoring alarm systems, the supertanker has a crew of 24.

Chen Liping, manager of the builder, the Longxue Shipyard, told Xinhua that Longxue would be building another three highly- automated tankers for China Shipping (Group) Company.

Chen said the supertanker brochure printing marked a big step forward in technological innovation and high value-added production by Longxue Shipyard and its owner China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).

The Shanghai-based CSSC, whose turf is mainly in eastern and southern China, is one of China's two leading state-owned shipbuilders.

Also Sunday, the other leading state-owned shipbuilder, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), said profits in 2009 jumped 18.5 percent to 7.39 billion yuan (1.1 billion U.S. dollars).

The Beijing-based conglomerate, whose shipyards are mainly in northern China, said operating incomes rose 17 percent to 120.9 billion yuan.

INNOVATION KEY TO GROWTH

CSIC General manager, Li Changyin, said the CSIC had minimized the impact of the global financial crisis, which crippled the global sea-based trade and slashed demand for ships, through technological innovation.

"The worse the (economic) downturn is, the more important the technological innovation is," Li said.

With innovation and improved design, CSIC shipyards were able to develop new products, including 180,000-DWT bulk carriers, 320,000- DWT oil tankers, 13,000-TEU containers as well as new types of drilling platforms that could be used in waters up to 400 feet (120 meters), said Li.

Li said the CSIC profit target for 2010 was 8 billion yuan. The operating income was expected to surpass 140 billion yuan and CSIC output in 2010 was likely to break 10 million DWTs.
